The DFB women stand for diversity in society. This also symbolizes the new captain at the European Championship in Switzerland.

Giulia Gwinn will wear the rainbow bandage as a German captain at the European Football Championship in Switzerland. “For us it is nice that it was made possible. It was also no question to change the bandage at all,” said the 25-year-old from FC Bayern Munich at the DFB press conference in Zurich with a view to the debates and bans in the past.

The rainbow-colored captain’s armband is a symbol of the so-called LGBTQI+community and is intended to set a sign against discrimination and for diversity. The then German captain Alexandra Popp was already wearing the rainbow bandage at the EM 2022 in England.

“We want to carry out these values”

“Our team just stands for so much,” said Gwinn. “We want to carry out exactly these values. And of course it is nice that we can do it on stage.”

In her first game as captain, the defender had carried a bandage in black and red gold, then one in rainbow colors. The DFB selection of national coach Christian Wück starts on Friday (9:00 p.m./ARD) in St. Gallen against Poland.

Alternative is the “Respect” bandage

Shortly before the men’s World Cup 2022 in Qatar, there was a huge debate around the rainbow bandage. In the end, the captain of several teams, including national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, only wore the so-called “One Love” bandage. At that time, critics said that the DFB and other associations Katar Katar in front of the World Cup host because homosexuality was punishable there.

The DFB has registered the rainbow bandage at the European Football Union as requested. The UEFA also provides the teams at the European Championship in Switzerland yellow and blue armbands with the inscription “Respect”.

Gwinn for the first time as a German captain at a tournament

Gwinn leads the German team at a tournament for the first time as a captain. “It’s just a very, very great honor for me. As a little girl, I started playing football, loving football. Now as a captain before a big tournament as a captain, it is difficult to put it in words,” she said.

The English abbreviation LGBTQI+ stands for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans-people, queer and intersex people-and the plus sign is a placeholder for other identities and genders.
