Former BVB pro Mikel Merino looks back on his time in Dortmund and draws comparisons with his current club.
According to Mikel Merino, the team structure at his current club Real Sociedad in San Sebastian is better than at Borussia Dortmund, where he played in the 2016/17 season.
“We also had a good group in Dortmund, but we’re friends here,” said Merino der sports picture. “Many have been playing and living together since they were young, doing a lot together like movie nights or coffee rounds after training. That’s a few percentage points more when it comes to fighting for each other. Different ways of life. It was a little different then than here .”
Merino on BVB time: “Maybe not mature enough yet”
Denied in Dortmund under coach Thomas Tuchel, he only made nine competitive appearances. “Of course I would have liked more confidence and chances. I was convinced that I already had what it takes to triumph in Dortmund,” said Merino.
“Sometimes the way the coach doesn’t like the way you play, sometimes the environment isn’t right. There’s the confidence thing I mentioned. And maybe I wasn’t mature enough to excel.”
According to his own statement, his development since leaving Dortmund was “quite fast”. After a year on loan at Newcastle United, Merino moved to San Sebastian in 2018 for twelve million euros, where he has been a regular for most of the past three and a half years. On Thursday he will meet RB Leipzig with San Sebastian in the first leg of the Europa League intermediate round.
