Hamilton gives home fans with a best time in Silverstone
Formula 1 completes the first half of the season with the race in Silverstone. In the first training session, Lewis Hamilton gives the British fans reason to celebrate.
Record winner Lewis Hamilton has once again proven to be Silverstone expert in the opening training in front of the British Grand Prix. The 40-year-old, who has won here nine times, left all the competition behind the first rounds of exercise in Ferrari.
“Driving here for the first time in a Ferrari will be a unique experience,” the Briton had previously said. Hamilton had sensationally switched from Mercedes to Scuderia before this season.
Training second became McLaren-Pilot Lando Norris. Third place was his team-mate Oscar Piatri, the current World Cup leader. Hamilton’s stable rival Charles Leclerc was fourth and strengthened the hope of a winless Ferrari team this season for a good result in Silverstone. World champion Max Verstappen had to be content with tenth place in the Red Bull.
Test pilot replaces Hülkenberg
The only German regular pilot, Nico Hülkenberg, still had to watch in the first training session. The short-term alpine replacement driver Paul Aron took over his car at the Kick-Sauber team. The Estonian came back to the garage as 17th.
Before the twelfth season run on Sunday (4:00 p.m./Sky), Piatri leads the overall ranking with a 15 -point lead over his team -mate Norris. Defending champion Verstappen already has 61 points behind Piatri after his recent accident in Austria.
