Formula 1 in Silverstone
Vetten sets Vettel stamp
In an exciting Formula 1 qualification in Silverstone, Max Verstappen trumps at the very end. The world champion has now collected as many poles as a German in the Red Bull.
Max Verstappen wiped highly after the furious ride to the pole position on the Formula 1 wind lottery from Silverstone with the towel through the face. In the Red Bull garage, the mechanics fell into their arms after difficult weeks. With a masterful final round, the world champion secured the best starting place for the British Grand Prix and referred World Cup leaders Oscar Piatri and his McLaren colleague Lando Norris in two and three.
“It was difficult out there with the wind. I am very happy, that gives a motivation boost for the team,” said Verstappen. With its 44th pole position, the Dutch equalized Sebastian Vettel’s team pest. The trouble around the car, which is often difficult to drive and the continued speculations about a change in the quadruple champion to Mercedes were forgotten.
Silverstone as a spectator magnet
Almost half a million fans await the organizers this weekend in the county of Northamptonshire. No Grand Prix recently had more spectators. 75 years ago, Formula 1 in Silverstone performed its premiere race, the ride is currently experiencing greater growth than ever. “Silverstone has the right properties to stay in the racing calendar forever,” said Formula 1 managing director Stefano Domenicali a few days before the guest appearance in Central English.
The hero of the masses is also a record world champion Lewis Hamilton this year, who has won his home race nine times. “From my first victory in 2008 until my ninth last year, the crowd always stood behind me. And wherever I am on the track, I can feel your energy in the cockpit,” said the 40-year-old. For the first time, however, Sir Lewis drives a Ferrari in Silverstone after leaving Mercedes surprisingly before the season.
For a Grand Prix victory with the Scuderia, Hamilton is still waiting after eleven seasonal runs. The measure of things are the McLaren. Before the race on Sunday (4:00 p.m./Sky), the Australian Piatri leads the overall ranking with a 15 -point lead over his team -mate Norris. According to his latest accident, Verstappen already has 61 points behind Piatri as a World Cup press.
Colapinto has to worry about cockpit after a turner
Before it got really serious in the qualification, the pilots first had to go back to the garages. The hapless Franco Colapinto turned from the route into the gravel bed, a little later he had to turn off his damaged alpine on the edge. The 22 -year -old Argentinian, who had only replaced Jack Doohan in early May, has to worry about his cockpit again after a series of weak appearances.
When the route was free again, Nico Hülkenberg quickly finished work. For the Kick-Sauber driver, it was only enough for a disappointing 19th place. “We don’t have the speed like in the last three races and have not been competitive enough so far,” said the 37-year-old.
The hunt for the best starting place then became a real exchange of blows. For a long time it looked as if the World Cup leading Piatri was back in front, even if Hamilton once again seemed to develop its Silverstone magic. But while the record champion had a little braking at the crucial moment and was only fifth, Verstappen gave up again. With the last round, the Dutch took the lead and pushed a scream of joy to the box radio.
