When footballers die in the middle of their career

Portuguese international Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain. Other football professionals were also torn out of life far too early.

The football world is in shock after Diogo Jota’s death. The Portuguese international died in a car accident at the age of 28 – apparently a tire had burst on his car. The car came off the road, broke through a guardrail and caught fire. The brother of Diogo Jota did not survive the accident either.

Swor players and companions react shocked to the death of the professional. “That makes no sense,” wrote Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of the Portuguese national team, on social networks. “We were just together with the national team, you had just just married.” Jota and his wife had said yes two weeks before the accident, the footballer leaves three children.

Also Jürgen Klopp, Jota’s former coach at Liverpool FC, mourns: “This is a moment when I rings with myself! There must be a greater purpose! But I can’t see it! It breaks my heart to hear from the death of Diogo and his brother André.”

Grief for Diogo Jota: The Bundesliga has already experienced losses

The Jota case shows that professional footballers are not immune to sudden strokes of fate. In our photo gallery we show which other players were torn out of life much too early in the middle of their career. The Bundesliga also experienced such losses – for example through the car accident of the young Wolfsburg striker Junior Malanda 2015 or the suicide of goalkeeper Robert Enke in 2009, who touched the whole country at the time.

A few years ago, the team of the Brazilian first division club Chapecoense crashed the plane – almost the entire team died.
