35 years after the title in 1990: What became of the world champions?
On July 8, 1990, Germany won the World Cup title with a 1-0 in the final against Argentina. But only a few world champions were able to get the shine after their career.
The penalty of Andreas Brehme, captain Lothar Matthäus with the World Cup Cup, the lonely Franz Beckenbauer on the lawn of the Olympic Stadium. These scenes have been exactly 35 years ago – in 1990 Germany was world champion in Rome in Rome for the third time.
For the players who belonged to the DFB squad at the World Cup in Italy, it was the greatest success of their football career. Only a few of them stood in the spotlight after their sporting career and were able to build on their glamorous moments on the lawn.

In fact, there are just a handful of players who were active as a trainer or functional after their career end. And of all things, Andreas Brehme, shooter of the decisive penalty goal in the final, has already died. Team boss Franz Beckenbauer also died last year.

In 1994, the national team left the quarter -finals as defending champion. In 1996 Germany won the European Championship title again, but this was followed by very lean years. It was only with the 2006 World Cup, the “summer fairy tale” in their own country, that the era of a new, successful team started.
