Cheers, but no hymns of praise: Wück criticizes team

The preliminary round has survived the preliminary round at the European Championship – in contrast to the 2023 World Cup in Australia. National coach Wück clearly appeals to the deficits.

With a huge music box and to sounds by Robin Williams’ “Angels”, the German footballers climbed out of the team bus. In the hotel in Zurich, the celebration continued even after the early quarter -finals at the European Championship – Christian Wück brooded out for a long time about his team’s deficits. After the 2-1 against Denmark and before the last group game against Sweden, the national coach did not save with criticism of his singing, but not always strong.

Of course, the relief about the “mentality victory” was big with the eight -time title winner. “We are incredibly happy that we bent it around. It was extremely important for me to see this face of the team, because from a technical point of view, we did not manage it from a playful point of view,” Wück said after the deserved but tedious success in the St. Jakob Park in Basel, sold out with 34,165 spectators.

The 52-year-old praised the typical German virtues of his selection: struggle, mentality, will to win. But playfully, the DFB team revealed many defects, even if Lea Schüller inspired everyone with her winning goal. “Technically unclean”, her team was partly, also admitted penalty scorer Sjoeke Nüsken: “We have to turn it off, urgently. It is really important that we continue to work on ourselves and get the basics on the square from front to back.”

Against the Swedishes, on Saturday (9:00 p.m./ZDF and DAZN) in Zurich, it is about the group victory-and about the Wück team in a top form before the really big challenges are waiting in the KO games.

Wück mocked – once again – about the pass quality of his players. “The first contact is the first thing that stands out – and that is the difference between the absolute top teams when I think of France and Spain. We will tackle that.” Many balls covered the Germans on the offensive, where game designer Linda Dallmann found little gaps and often fizzled out the pace of wing flasher Jule Brand.

“We don’t have to hide from any nation. But of course we have to make sure that we reach our absolute top level with everyone in a team,” warned the national coach. “We already realize that it is not possible, but that is also no surprise that they are hard games,” said substitute midfielder Laura Freiang, even in retrospect for the 2-0 win at the start of the tournament against Poland.

Wamser convinces as a gwinn replacement

On the defensive, the 21-year-old Carlotta Wamser convinced on the right as the deputy of the injured captain Giulia Gwinn. The defense chief and new captain Janina Minge often had to stuff gaps on counterattacks.

Wück meanwhile had to pluck a chicken with his goalkeeper: the dribbles by Ann-Katrin Berger clearly finds the chief coach too risky. The chief coach answered the question of whether the offensive playing style of the 34-year-old Olympic heroine of 2024 was so in order for him with a clear “no”.

For the time being, he couldn’t say more about the topic, added Wück, “but of course I will sit at the table with her that we have to find other solutions – because otherwise I will not get old”.

Berger had let Danish players run into the void three times in front of their own goal instead of clarifying the ball at an early stage. The risky maneuvers always went well.

Berger defends himself against Wück criticism

After the game at the US Club NY/NJ Gotham FC, after the game, defended her fins on request: “Maybe it looks like this with you, but I have to honestly say: The three actions I had, I actually had a really good feeling.”

Despite the Wücks scolding, she does not necessarily want to deviate from her risky game – especially since she sees the topic very relaxed: “If I sometimes look at the football clips, it just looks very different from your perspective as with me and that’s why I would probably do it again,” she said with a smile.

“I will definitely not get it out”

Her pulse did not hit the dribbles higher. “I love playing football and I think that’s just my way. Maybe you can minimize it, but I think I will definitely not get it out,” said the regular keeper.

She will still speak with Wück to look for a common solution. “If the head coach says something else now, see if I will continue.”
