DFB women celebrate their injured captain Giulia Gwinn

For Giulia Gwinn, the European Championship is over. Nevertheless, the DFB captain is always there-the cohesion in the team only seems to have strengthened the shock.

The German women’s team started in the European Championship in Switzerland with a shock. In the first group game against Poland (2-0), Giulia Gwinn was injured on the knee. The initially feared cruciate ligament tear was not confirmed, but with her inner ligament injury, the captain fails for weeks and will no longer play a game at the European Championship.

Gwinn has now left the German district-but in the second game against Denmark, the 26-year-old was still omnipresent. Before and after the game, almost everything seemed to turn the player who was not on the pitch. And by no means in a negative sense: their teammates used every opportunity to send greetings to Gwinn, to give their courage and to demonstrate cohesion.

Messages with a jersey and bracelet

In the mandatory team photo before the kick -off, Klara Bühl and Elisa Sense kept a jersey with Gwinn’s name in the camera. The same jersey was in the middle of the circle, in which the team sworn in. And all players wore bracelets on the pitch with the inscription “GG7” – i.e. gwinn’s initials and their rear number – on the wrist during the 90 minutes. In the stands, banners such as “We together for Giuli – get well soon” were to be seen.

The eleven players in turn focused on themselves. Gwinn representative Carlotta Wamser did her job properly on the right, and in general the team spirit, who distinguishes the women’s DFB team, seemed to be grown only by the loss of the captain. At the penalty, Sjoeke Nüsken Proactive took responsibility instead of Gwinn.

Giulia Gwinn wants to come to the last group game

After the goals in the 2-1 win against Denmark, the players showed their bracelets to the television cameras. “It was a team thing, I don’t even know who came up with the idea. We wanted to send a gesture to the outside and at the same time have what always gives us strength,” said gun of Klara Bühl, teammate of Giulia Gwinn at FC Bayern, the “Editorial Network Germany”.

Gwinn himself was touched by the sympathy. “Speechless,” she posted on Instagram. Before the game, the injured Munich native sent the team an emotional message, revealed national coach Christian Wück. Gwinn wants to arrive for the last group game against Sweden on Saturday to be there at least as a viewer.
