Successful appeal – Olympique Lyon does not have to lose weight
Olympique Lyon can breathe a sigh of relief two weeks after the shock message-the club can stay in Ligue 1. However, he does not get away without any consequences.
Olympique Lyon will also play in France’s first football league next season. A few months ago, what was a matter of course is now good news for the club and its fans. The Financial Supervision DNCG (Direction National Du Contrôle de Gestung) had sentenced the “Lyonnaise” to a forced relegation at the end of June.
The DNCG appeal committee has now lifted this decision from the first instance, as “L’Equipe” reports. Ol does not get away without punishment. According to the report, the association will have to comply with an upper limit among the player salaries. At first there was no information about how high it is and how long it applies.
Olympique Lyon published statement
On Wednesday afternoon, Olympique Lyon released the decision in which the club welcomes the decision. OL thanks “to the appeal committee for the recognition of the ambitions of the new club management, which is determined to continue to ensure serious leadership in the future.”
It also says: “The new management, which is supported by the commitment and dedication of our shareholders and lenders, is extremely grateful for the support that it receives both within and outside of the club, including the support of his supporters, employees, players, partners and selected officials.”
Fan protests against owners
The French first division club has been owned by the American John Textor since 2022. In November 2024, the financial supervision DNCG had already imposed on the forced relegation on probation, and the club’s debt should have amounted to around 500 million euros at the time. On June 24, 2025, the judgment followed, which has now been lifted again.
Olympique fans had protested in social networks and in front of the stadium against textor. Despite the successful appointment, they are still likely to be critical of him. In terms of sport, things went well at OL: the club became sixth in the league and thus qualified for the Europa League.
