Lipowitz shines on tour – Ullrich “Super impressed”

Evenepoel wins the time trial and Pogacar wears yellow – but the German youngster also causes a sensation. Lipowitz is the sixth better than ex-winner Vingegaard and his own captain Roglic.

Florian Lipowitz proudly stood in front of the team bus and was pleased that his first Tour de France is now taking a lot of speed. And even Jan Ullrich was “super impressed” at home from the new German hope on the Tour of France.

“I think he doesn’t even know how strong he is,” said ARD’s only German tour champion. “I would not have thought that he was going so far ahead. He got out properly at the back,” added Ullrich. He trusts the 24-year-old “a lot”. He believes that he can ride “at the very front” in the mountains.

Lipowitz sixth in time trial – Vingegaard with bankruptcy

Lipowitz drove over the finish line with a distance of 58 seconds behind the day winner Remco Evenepoel. And was around 20 seconds faster than his own Red Bull captain Primoz Roglic and the two-time tour winner Jonas Vingegaard, who collected a crashing bankruptcy. In the overall classification, Lipowitz is only a second behind Roglic. Is there a change in the team hierarchy? “From a German perspective, I hope that it happens similarly to Bjarne (Riis) and me,” said Ullrich with a view to his Tour Triumph 1997.

“I’m more than satisfied. I didn’t start the tour so well. I doubted myself a bit. That’s why this is a bright spot for the coming days today,” said Lipowitz of the ARD. The Swabian native climbed over the overall ranking from 20th to 9th place. Vingegaard’s result would have “surprised” him.

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar celebrated his regained yellow jersey 353 days after his tour of the tour in Nice last year. The three-time winner of the France tour in Normandy slipped for the first time in the 112nd edition of the tour into the coveted dress. In addition, the Slovenian also leads in the sprint and in the mountain ranking.

“I am very happy to be back in yellow,” said Pogacar. The most important of his three jerseys is the yellow. “But it is even more important to wear it on the finish line in Paris,” he pushed after. The performance of his greatest rival Vingegaard surprised him. “I don’t lie, I didn’t expect that.”

Vingegaard only fourth

In the overall ranking, Pogacar is now 1:13 minutes a few seconds in front of the Danes Vingegaard, who slipped to fourth place from the second. Double Olympic champion Evenepoel is 42 seconds behind Pogacar after his clear victory, the Frenchman Kevin Vauquelin follows with a distance of 59 seconds.

Pogacar finished the time trial on the fifth stage around the northern French city of Caen on a flat 33 kilometers with a distance of 16 seconds behind evenepoel. As expected, the gifted Belgian could not be exceeded in the race against the clock.

Schachmann about Evenepoel: Course “is very, very good”

The Slovenian cycling superstar Pogacar predicted a “real test” for the favorites. At the Dauphiné, the later winner Pogacar had shown significant weaknesses in the time trial in preparation for the tour and had driven 48 seconds to Evenepoel and 28 to Vingegaard via the finish line.

Evenepoel lived up to the expectations of him. He looked at the course exactly beforehand and started as a big favorite in Caen. The former football talent already won the world championship title twice as the best time driver, in 2024 he triumphed at the Olympics both in time trial and on the street. Above all, the Belgian wanted to make up for the two rushed favorites Pogacar and Vingegaard.

“It is a course that is very, very good,” said Evenepoel’s team-mate Maximilian Schachmann, who started in the German jersey of time, but had nothing to do with the front places.

In the race for the leadership jersey, even before the time trial, Evenepoel was 50 seconds behind the Danes and 58 behind Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel. The Dutchman van der Poel remained in the leadership jersey during the stage, but he himself knew that the defense of the overall lead should be a difficult undertaking.

Spectacular mountain time trial in the second half of the tour

The second and recent time trial of this tour will be spectacular: Then the steep climb to the airfield in Peyragudes will be on the 13th stage on July 18. But initially on Thursday, outliers will receive the chance of a day’s victory at Bayeux in Normandy’s 2015 kilometers from Bayeux.
