Dream semi-final in Wimbledon: Sinner meets Djokovic
Novak Djokovic hopes for his eighth Wimbledon title, Jannik Sinner on the premiere coup. The two superstars play for the final on Friday. Before that, Djokovic experiences a moment of terror.
The tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner made their dream duel perfect in Wimbledon and play for the final entry with the lawn classic. Djokovic settled 6: 7 (6: 8), 6: 2, 7: 5, 6: 4 in the quarter -finals against the Italian outsider Flavio Cobolli and got the next record of his career.
The 38-year-old Serb is in the men’s Wimbledon semi-final for the 14th time and left the Swiss Roger Federer in this statistics behind. Djokovic had to survive a moment of shock when he slipped in his second match ball and remained for a short time. But it continued – two points later the victory was perfect. “I ended the match,” he said with a laugh at the scene. “It was a bad fall.”
On Sunday, he wants to get the eighth title in the All England Club and thus pull it with Federer.
Previously, the meeting with the world ranking of Jannik Sinner is pending on Friday. Despite problems on the right elbow against the American Ben Shelton, the Italian won 7: 6 (7: 2), 6: 4, 6: 4 and can continue to dream of his first Wimbledon title. The further semi -finals contest defending champion Carlos Alcaraz from Spain and the American Taylor Fritz.
Djokovic fully demanded against Cobolli
Sinner’s compatriot Cobolli demanded everything from his idol Djokovic. As in the round of 16, the favorite lost the first set, but fought back. Overall, Djokovic made much fewer mistakes and took the surcharge to the outsider at the crucial moment of the third and fourth set.
The next opponent Sinner was happy with his idea, also because he could hardly train the day before because of the elbow blessing. “If you are in a match with a lot of tension, you don’t try to think about it. It has improved a lot since yesterday,” he said.
Sinner had injured the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 16 with a fall on the right elbow, was with 0: 2 sets, but benefited from the task of his opponent. Then the 23-year-old had himself examined by MRI.
Sinner’s painful blow in the second set
As with training in the morning, Sinner wore a white armling for protection. In the second set, the South Tyrolean only hit one of Shelton’s crashes with the frame of his racket. Then he shook his arm and kept the elbow several times.
Nevertheless, Sinner showed his extra class in the crucial moments of the game and in the second round the only break made it to 6: 4. Shellton had been taping on the foot shortly before. Also in the third round, Sinner took his opponent with 5: 4 lead and was able to cheer on his second semi-finals in Wimbledon.
