Abdilaahi breaks 28-year-old Baumann record
In 1997 he was not born when a certain Dieter Baumann set the German record over the 5000 meters. Now Mohamed Abdilaahi is the best time holder.
Mohamed Abdilaahi broke the almost 28 -year -old German record over the 5000 meters of Dieter Baumann. The 26-year-old needed at the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco for the five kilometers 12: 53.63 minutes. He remained a good second under the 12: 54.70 minutes from Baumann, which the Olympic champion needed on August 13, 1997 in Zurich.
Recordman about Baumann-Run: I wasn’t born yet
“I couldn’t really realize it at all,” said Abdilaahi at Sportschau.de after his record run. The past few weeks have been a bit tough due to muscular problems. “I almost briefly came to tears, I’m honest, but I could still hold them back.”
Abdilaahi showed a great performance in the Stade Louis II of Monaco in the victory of the Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha. “I knew I got it on the right day when everything came together,” said Abdilaahi.
For three years he has been trying to crack Baumann’s German record brand. “It just pushes me in training every day. It is insane how quickly Dieter Baumann could run back then,” said Abdilaahi: “I wasn’t in the world yet.” It was incredible that he was now able to break this brand.
With the run well under 13 minutes, he secured the ticket for the World Cup in Tokyo. He gave him “mega self-awareness” that he had become fourth in such a field, emphasized Abdilaahi. These are all runners against whom he also has to compete at the World Cup.
