Should Diego Simeone leave Atletico Madrid prematurely, the club has apparently committed itself to a prominent candidate.
Ernesto Valverde, former FC Barcelona manager, is said to be Atletico Madrid’s preferred candidate to succeed Diego Simeone should he leave the Rojiblancos prematurely. This is reported by the Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
However, this is said to be just a precautionary measure as Atletico Madrid currently have no plans to sack Simeone. However, it is possible that Simeone wants to leave the club of his own accord after this season, two years before his contract expires. Atletico are currently in fifth place in the Primera Division table and are in danger of missing out on qualifying for the 2022/23 Champions League.
Atletico: Twice champion under Simeone
Simeone has been the manager of Atletico Madrid since 2011. Under the Argentine, the club has won the Spanish championship twice, won the cup once and won the UEFA Europa League twice.
Ernesto Valverde has been without a club since his sacking at FC Barcelona in 2020. With Barca he won the championship twice.
