Sinner wins curious bets with a trainer through Wimbledon win
Jannik Sinner celebrates his first triumph at the classic lawn. After that, he speaks emotionally about the past year. The final victory also has a special meaning for the future.
Jannik Sinner has won a curious bet with his trainer through the Wimbledon triumph and can now determine itself by continuing the successful cooperation. Former Australian tennis professional Darren Cahill made the Italian number one in the world, led four Grand slam titles and actually wants to end his career as a coach at the end of the year.
“We had a bet before the final. He told me that if I win tomorrow, I can choose whether it will stay or not. That is my decision,” said Sinner after the four-set victory in the Wimbledon final against the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. “If I decide to continue with him, he won’t travel as much anymore. I have always looked for an honest person who gives me a lot, not only on the tennis court, but also outside, as you live. He is great.”
Sinner: “It was not easy all year round”
The 59 -year -old Cahill, who also led Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt and Simona Halep, said to the future: “I don’t want to answer that. You have to ask Jannik.” The Italian Simone Vagnozzi also belongs to the coaching team.
Cahill has been training Sinner since July 2022 and defended his protégé even after two positive doping tests became known. The South Tyrolean was closed for three months after the triumph at the Australian Open. At the French Open, Sinner had suffered a bitter defeat against Alcaraz in an epic final despite three match balls.
“I thought of all the things that I went through last time. It was not easy all year round,” said Sinner about his thoughts after the triumph. “It feels emotionally because only the people who are close to me and I know what I went through on and off the square and that was anything but easy.”
