Cycling master Zimmermann gets off after falling on tour

A drinking bottle takes the German champion carpenter. Zimmermann still fights for the finish line – but before the tricky tenth stage, the Augsburger ends its fifth Tour de France.

The German road cyclist Georg Zimmermann ended his fifth Tour de France because of the consequences of his violent fall. After the unfortunate incident on the 9th stage on Sunday, the Augsburger had been monitored by the team doctor and the decision was made not to continue the race, his intermarché team said. On the French national holiday, the first demanding mountain stage for cycling professionals faced 4,450 meters of altitude.

Zimmermann, who had cheered the German championship title in the street race in the Palatinate about two weeks ago, had to be sewn in two places about 117 kilometers before the finish in Châteauroux after the fall. The 27-year-old did not suffer any broken bones. However, Zimmermann complained of great pain on the left elbow. At first he was still determined to continue the tour.

The cause of the fall is apparently determined

Apparently he fell through a drinking bottle on the street. “I just drank out of my bottle, the next moment I slammed onto the floor. My teammates later told myself that I drove against a bottle that had somehow ended up on the street – inevitable.
