Yet another attempt: Del Potro began a new treatment at a prestigious clinic in Switzerland

In this context, the 33-year-old tennis player and 2009 US Open champion began this week a new medical treatment for his right knee at the Rennbahnklinik clinic, a specialized center located in the Swiss city of Muttenz, eight kilometers from Basel, the cradle of the remarkable Roger Federer.

Several athletes were treated at that clinic, such as the Serbian Novak Djokovic when he had surgery on his right elbow in 2017, the Spanish tennis player Pablo Andújar also on his right elbow in 2017, or the Chilean footballer of German Bayer Leverkusen Charles Arangüiz on his Achilles tendon in 2015.

In the case of Del Potro, he returned to tennis last February 8 at the Argentina Open after an inactivity of 965 days and four operations on his right kneecap.

The 33-year-old from Tandil had previously played in the Queen’s English Open in June 2019 and after four surgeries he was able to return to the Argentina Open, where he lost in the opening round against Federico Delbonis from Azul.

Before that match, the man from Tandil, one of the best Argentine tennis players of all time, had announced that, harassed by injuries, his retirement was imminent and that he did not plan his future as a tennis player but wanted to recover his knee “to live like a normal person.”

The fall against Delbonis on a night of pure emotion at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, with 5,000 fans giving him a standing ovation, was perhaps the last appearance on a tennis court, in fact after the match he symbolically hung his headband on the tennis net center court Guillermo Vilas.

Del Potro, unable to move on the court and also handicapped to connect his fearsome serve, since he cannot propel himself with his knee, lost to Delbonis 6-1 and 6-3, and canceled his next presentation at the Rio Open of the week following.

The affection received from his fans and the support of the most important tennis players on the circuit such as Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Stan Wawrinka, almost all active Argentines and some retirees such as the American Andy Roddick, motivated “Delpo” to try something more, although it is not known if it will allow him to play again

“Before I used to go from the Capital to Tandil driving my car in three and a half hours, but since I injured my knee I have to make one or two stops on the route before arriving because I can’t stand the pain,” Del Potro confessed at the wheel of press in which he announced that the end of his career was imminent.

The truth is that the 2009 US Open champion, double Olympic medalist with his Bronze in London 2012 and Silver in Rio 2016, and the hero of the Davis Cup that Argentina won in 2016, among other feats, began a new treatment in Europe and only time will give its verdict on whether it will help you to play again or at least to lead a healthy life.
