The winter athlete Audun Grønvold died at the age of 49. On a hike, a flash of lightning met him, the Norwegian succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Audun Grønvold celebrated his great success at the 2010 Winter Olympics. In Vancouver, the Norwegian won the bronze medal in the SkiRoss. Now the ski runner has died at the age of 49.



The Norwegian Ski Association reported the death of its former athlete. Accordingly, Grønvold was killed by lightning. The accident occurred on a hut tour at the weekend. Grønvold was seriously injured to a hospital. There the winter athlete succumbed to his injuries a few days later. He leaves a woman and three children.

“The Norwegian skiing has lost an outstanding personality that both meant the alpine and freestyle community so much,” said Tove Moe Dyrhaug, President of the Norwegian Ski Association. The death of Grønvold leaves a “huge gap”.


His wife wrote on Facebook: “My great love and my best friend for twenty years. You left us today. What started with a wonderful summer vacation ended last Saturday with the fact that you were hit by lightning while we were outside at our hut.”




Grønvold started his sporty career in alpine sport and then switched to the ski cross. In addition to his bronze medal in Vancouver, he took third place at the 2005 World Championships. After the success at the Olympics, he had to end his active career due to various physical problems. After the career, he worked as a coach of the Norwegian Skicross team.


Numerous former teammates and companions also mourn the crashed winter athlete. “It is just terribly tragic and sad news. It was a sudden and much too early death,” said his former colleague Kjetil André Aamodt to Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
