Women’s European Championship
Goalkeeper holds four penalty – and yet becomes a tragic figure
The quarter-finals of the European women between Sweden and England were hard to beat in terms of drama. Jennifer Falk looked like the heroine – and was deeply disappointed in the end.
A goalkeeper can’t do better than Jennifer Falk. When there was a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals of the European European Championships between Sweden and England, the Swede grew beyond itself.
She parried four penalty of the English women, Falk was on the top of securing her team the victory and moving into the semi -finals. Nevertheless, the goalkeeper finally became a tragic figure, because she too had her share in the fact that Sweden left dramatically.
Falk had already kept three English shots off the point, the next converted penalty for Sweden would decide the game. Then the goalkeeper grabbed the ball herself – and shot over the box.
Women’s European Championship: “Empty” with Swedish goalkeeper after a penalty drama
Decision missed. Falk did not let it be put off and parried the next attempt by the English. In the further course of the penalty shootout, however, their colleagues showed nerves. Sweden, who had already led 2-0 at halftime and then conceded two goals within two minutes, drives home.
With Jennifer Falk, the disappointment after the game was accordingly huge. “Empty, a thousand feelings at the same time, that is hard to describe,” she said her inner life. “It is a difficult situation to shoot a penalty. I missed my own penalty. To be honest, I don’t know what to say, it just feels very difficult at the moment.”
Falk told coach Peter Gerhardsson if she wanted to shoot. “And I said yes.” For her actual job in the goal, the 32-year-old from the Swedish Club BK Häcken stuck a note on her drinking bottle, from which she was able to read the preferred corners of the opponents.
European champion England looked like the loser for a long time and now meets Italy in the semi -finals. The German women, who lost their last group game against Sweden 1: 4, play on Saturday (9 p.m.) in the quarter -finals against France. In the semifinals, either the hosts from Switzerland or the tournament favorites from Spain would wait.
