The story of Mauro Amato and how he got involved to transform the lives of young people with football

Amato had his professional journey in the ascent and also abroad, but it was out of football where he found his true vocation. For years, he has been working in youth detention centers, where he promotes workshops, talks and matches with a different approach: that the ball is a channel to open other doors.

The initiative arose in the middle of a deep personal search. “Football gave me a lot, but I also saw everything that can frustrate. That’s why I decided to use it as a bridge”he explained. Its presence in these spaces is not only symbolic: it actively participates in training, listen to young people and generates confidence links.

The objective is not to train professional players, but to accompany personal processes. Many of the boys who attend their talks find, for the first time, an environment where they feel respected and content. Within that framework, football makes sense again for them and also for him.

He never feared positioning himself: the remembered festivities of Amato

During his career as a footballer, Amato did not go unnoticed. Beyond his goals, he was the protagonist of celebrations that marked a clear position in the face of social and political situations. One of the most remembered was The tribute to the mothers of Plaza de Mayo on the middle of the courtgesture that generated both recognition and controversy. It was also one of the few sports personalities that was pronounced in a Request for justice for the murder of graphic reporter José Luis Cabezas.

That commitment did not go out with the withdrawal. His current work with young people in vulnerable contexts also implies taking a position against complex issues, such as the prison system, labor opportunities or the abandonment of the State.
