Tour of France
Third place: Lipowitz continues to write about his tour “fairy tale”
The third place in the overall ranking and as an encore still the white jersey: for Florian Lipowitz, his first Tour de France is just fairytale – this should continue until Paris.
Florian Lipowitz feels “a bit like in a fairy tale at the Tour de France.” Third place after 14 stages and as an encore the white jersey of the best young professional. After the outstanding performance in the Pyrenees, the 24-year-old is allowed to dream of the podium in Paris on his first tour of France. Lipowitz has been the first German cyclist to be on the tour platform since 2006. At that time Andreas Klöden took second place.
In the overall classification, only the crème de la crème of world cycling is left in front of the young vertical starter from Swabia: tour dominator Tadej Pogacar and its permanent rival Jonas Vingegaard.
“I came here without expectations. That things are going so well for the first two weeks, so I would never have expected. Especially after the first three or four days when I was not so good,” said Lipowitz with a wide smile after the climbing section over almost 5,000 meters of altitude up to the Luchon superbagnéres. “A dream comes true.”
Lipowitz: “I can ride at the front”
At his goal of “simply arriving in Paris”, nothing has changed. Nevertheless, Lipowitz realistically classified his strong performance in the Pyrenees: “I think I’ve already shown a lot so far. I can ride in the front.” The third week with the heavy Alpine stages will be the decisive factor, explained the former biathlete. “I hope that the legs hold out and also survive the last week. I will do my best.”
With the course of the last three hard days in the high mountains, he was “very happy”. “The respect for the Pyrenees was great. But we got through super well.” By “we” the vertical starter of the German Red Bull racing team also means its experienced teammate Primoz Roglic. In the overall ranking, Lipowitz is just under two and a half minutes before the four-time Vuelta winner from Slovenia.
Compassion for competitor Evenepoel
After his first award ceremony on the large, yellow tour stage in Luchon superbagnéres, the new carrier of the white jersey also thought of the double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian, who was in third place before Lipowitz before the stage, rose from the bike on the legendary Col du Tourmalet and gave up.
“It is always sad when someone leaves the tour. Remco was a candidate for the white jersey and especially for third place. I’m very sorry. I hope that he will recover quickly,” said Lipowitz.
