“Commanders” and “Guardians”
Racism in the name? Trump wants to rename football team
In the middle of racism debates, the NFL team from Washington changes its name. US President Donald Trump is bothered by it. A baseball team is also in sight.
US President Donald Trump pushes the NFL team Washington Commanders to take up his old name again. “The Washington ‘whatever’ should immediately back up its name in Washington Redskin’s Football Team,” wrote the Republican on his platform Truth Social.
The football team had separated from his name Redskins (Rothäuten) and has been called Commanders since 2022. Previously, the team had been criticized for decades, and their name was a racist name. The name Redskins is associated with the murder of the indigenous population in US history. Trump has previously called for a return to the name of Redskins.
A threat to the Washington Commanders
Trump connects his demand with a threat. “I will possibly impose a restriction if you do not back up the name ‘Washington Redskins’ and get rid of the ridiculous nickname ‘Washington Commanders’.” And further: “I will not make a deal for the construction of a stadium in Washington.”
Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden signed a law in January of this year, according to which Robert F. Kennedy Stadium’s demolition tires will be transferred to the District of Columbia in Washington. This had created the prerequisite for building a new stadium in the same place.
Leading organizations for the rights of indigenous peoples reject the name Redskins, including the National Congress of American Indians, the Association on American Indian Affairs and Cultural Survival. However, at least one group, the Native American Guardian’s Association, the name Redskins and the “respectful use of Indian names and pictures in sport, in education and in public life” supports at least one group.
Trump also has a baseball team in his sights
Trump also calls for a name recovery from the baseball team Cleveland Guardians, which used to be called Cleveland Indians. Trump claimed that times were different than three or four years ago.
Years ago, the death of African American George Floyd triggered a racism debate in a police operation in the United States and also led to thinking about monuments and name changes.
