To EM-out against Spain
DFB captain Gwinn: “Have an incredibly good basis”
Title lost, heart won. After the end of the EM semi-final against Spain, captain Giulia Gwinn and DFB President Bernd Neuendorf are optimistic.
Despite the missed EM title, captain Giulia Gwinn sees the future of German footballers positively. “It is a super young team and what gets stuck is what we are able to do. That definitely makes you want more,” said the injured captain one day after the 0: 1 in the semi -finals against Spain at the team hotel in Zurich. “We have an incredibly good basis on the pitch in the next few years.” The next step was taken for women’s football.
Before the tournament in Switzerland, the DFB-Elf had given the first European championship title as the goal since 2013, but now the pride in the achievement prevailed. “At the moment there is a lot of frustration at the moment because we cannot bring it over time to take the last steps. But we can be very, very proud,” said Gwinn. One had “moved something again”.
The selection of national coach Christian Wück “an incredible unit has formed the last few weeks” and had grown beyond himself, praised the 26-year-old Bayern defender, who had contracted an inner ligament injury in the left knee in the first group game against Poland (2-0). Her early EM-out did “incredibly hurt”.
Neuendorf: “To overcome many resistance in this tournament”
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf was also completely satisfied with the European Championship appearance. “We had many resistance to overcome this tournament,” said the 64-year-old with a view of injuries and locks. The EM therefore “started something wonderful”. The cohesion bears for the upcoming games and beyond.
Talents such as the full -back Franziska Kett (20) or Carlotta Wamser (21) would have made it “outstanding,” praised Neuendorf. “Sometimes you just need the courage to give such players the stage – and they used it.”
This is also “a finger for what has to happen in the leagues, but also at the DFB,” said Neuendorf. The path to “rely on young players and their development” must continue. The clubs are well advised to create more offers for girls and women: “This will help football and our sport as a whole.”
