Designed and degraded: Ter Stegen becomes a World Cup car
Less than a year, then the World Cup is. National coach Nagelsmann committed himself to the number one in the goal very early – and increasingly gets into the bredouille.
Marc -André Ter wrote about a “personally difficult day” – and fell into a dilemma with his health setback Julian Nagelsmann. First a serious knee injury, then degraded and now again on sick leave: the national coach, who was committed to Ter Stegen as number one early, threaten to restlessness and debate about the holy position in goal.
Because now Nagelsmann is relating to a goalkeeper for the XXL tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada, who is out for the second time within a year and has also lost any support at his club.
No longer needed in Barcelona
The 33 -year -old Ter Stegen has to pause for a long time because of an operation on the back. He should miss the complete World Cup qualification with the DFB team this autumn. “Don’t worry, I will be back,” wrote Ter Stegen in his social media post, which he mainly aimed at the fans of FC Barcelona.
But at the World Club from Catalonia, long -time number one is no longer needed. Ter Stegen recently trained individually under Hansi Flick. Instead, the former national coach relies on the young Spaniard Joan Garcia as number one and veteran Wojciech Szczesny as his deputy. And the current national coach?
Nagelsmann aligned ter Stegen in a personal way. The DFB leadership initially waived public statements. But: Nagelsmann’s word applies. Almost a year before the start of the World Cup, Ter Stegen, who estimates his downtime itself for three months, still has time – but the long -time deputy of the Manuel Neuer, who was assigned in 2024, is becoming increasingly becoming a potential problem for the coming summer.
Matthew speculates on new comeback
This goes so far that record national player Lothar Matthäus has already publicly stimulates a comeback from Manuel Neuer. Nagelsmann has good alternatives with Oliver Baumann, Alexander Nübel and Bernd Leno, said Matthew at Sky. “However, if he realizes in the coming months that he cannot trust these options 100 %, you can of course deal with Manuel Neuer.”
There is no such thing as a result of such thought games. Neuer is 39 years old, drawn a clear line at the DFB after the home European Championship and missed many games in Bayern in the past three years due to injury. Adler: Without a game practice for the World Cup? Unthinkable
Nagelsmann will not be able to terminate his commitment to ter Stegen so quickly – and will probably be the qualification in autumn again with the Bundesliga goalkeepers Baumann (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) and Nübel (VfB Stuttgart). Both have proven to be reliable in the past Nation’s League season.
For ter Stegen, on the other hand, winter becomes the all -important transfer phase: after a year and a half years almost without a game practice, he will need a club to get on tours before the World Cup.
“The situation is so complex. I wish him that he quickly gets fit and that he finds the peace. But he does not have the time. The World Cup is just around the corner and it has to play. He will inevitably have to do something else in winter,” said ex-national goalkeeper René Adler of the German Press Agency. Adler himself lost his regular place in 2010 because he injured himself shortly before the World Cup.
It was “inconceivable” that Ter Stegen “will go to the World Cup without a game practice. It would not be fair to everyone,” said the 40 -year -old eagle. The DFB has been known for outstanding goalkeepers for decades. Oliver Kahn, Bodo Illgner, Toni Schumacher and Sepp Maier also shaped the national team at the big tournaments in front of the world goalkeeper Neuer.
Late tournament debut like Lehmann once
Ter Stegen sat for years and among various national coaches behind Neuer as number two on the bench and is supposed to celebrate his tournament debut in advanced football age with 34 – comparable to Jens Lehmann at the 2006 home World Cup. If it goes to goalkeeper Adler, Ter Stegen has earned the unconditional support of the sporting management at the DFB over the years.
“I would advocate keeping the door open for as long as possible. Marc was loyal for so long and would have earned it earlier. Now he needs loyalty. For me it is a question of respect to give him the time as long as possible,” said Adler.
