Zverev about mental problems: “Small burnout for months”

Alexander Zverev speaks again about difficult months. Can Rafael Nadal motivate the Germans again? There will probably be no closer cooperation this year.

Tennis professional Alexander Zverev has again given deep insights into his emotional world and reported mental problems this year. “I had a little burnout for months. I was not very motivated to play. I didn’t really want to train. I didn’t enjoy my time on the pitch,” said Zverev in the podcast “Nothing Major”.

The world ranking list also reported false decisions that he made against Jannik Sinner after the bitter defeat in the final of the Australian Open. “Instead of driving home, resting me and working up what happened, I was only at home for three days and then went straight to a tournament in Argentina. That was a mistake. I paid for the price for that,” practiced German self -criticism. At the three tournaments in February in South America and Mexico, Zverev missed the semi -finals.

According to his own statement, the Hamburg native feels better again. “I’m fresh in my head. Maybe I’m not playing my best tennis in Canada or then in Cincinnati. But when the US Open starts, I will be a title candidate again,” promised Zverev. The fourth Grand Slam tournament of the year begins on August 24th.

This week, Zverev will open at the ATP tournament in Toronto and meet his fear opponent Francisco Cerundolo from Argentina in the round of 16. The match takes place on the night of this Sunday.

Zverev and Nadal: “From next year probably more often”

On the way to his first Grand Slam title, Zverev continues to hope for support from the former world ranking first Rafael Nadal and his uncle Toni. Already after his first round in Wimbledon, Zverev had trained for several days in the Spaniard’s academy in Mallorca. “He believes that I can win a Grand Slam, but only when I play brave. I know that, but it’s something else to hear from him,” said Zverev.

Most recently, Zverev had reported to negotiate with the Nadals about a potential partnership. “I don’t know if you will often see Toni at my side this year. His schedule is pretty full. But from next year you could see him much more often,” said Zverev.
