Sven Schwarz wins silver at the swimming World Cup

Sven Schwarz wins his second medal from Singapore. The German swimmers are as successful as it has not been for a long time. Even if Florian Wellbrock doesn’t get on the podium this time.

Sven Schwarz won the silver medal over 1,500 meters of freestyle at the swimming World Cup. The 23-year-old only had to give up the victorious Ahmed Jaouadi from Tunisia in Singapore. Bronze won Bobby Finke from the USA. Black was missing 1.28 seconds on gold.

Florian Wellbrock, four -time title holder in the open water from Singapore, swam in fifth place as the second German starter. “If that had been going on again with a medal today, I would have become a little too good,” said Wellbrock: He showed that he was on the right track. “This is how we continue next year.” He wanted to continue to compete in the open water and the pool.

With twice gold, twice silver and once bronze, the German swimmers already ensured the most successful record in World Cup pool competitions since 2009. At that time, Britta Steffen and Paul Biedermann had been started for Germany.

Black over 800 meters on the podium

Schwarz had also won the silver medal over 800 meters freestyle on Wednesday. “I was behind the big boys when I was younger – now I’m one myself,” he said afterwards.

Black finally comes from the shadow of the other strong German long and medium-distance swimmers at this World Cup. In recent years, public attention has often focused on Wellbrock and Olympic champion Lukas Märtens. With this World Cup, Schwarz not only left many international competitors, but also the national teammates.

Black goes his own way

Unlike Wellbrock and Märtens, Schwarz is not in the Magdeburg training group of national coach Bernd Berkhahn. He has been working with coach Emil Guliyev for a long time and trains in Hanover. “He has a different philosophy than Bernd,” said Schwarz. In Singapore, he showed that his path could also be successful.

The finale had reached Schwarz as fourth fastest of the preliminaries. “Everyone can beat everyone,” he said with a view of the big showdown. “Everything is in there from eighth to one.”
