WM in Singapore
Black shines with silver – best swimming balance since 2009
Sven Schwarz gives the swimming team a medal for the World Cup degree. “Mega,” says Frekasser-Champion Wellbrock. The strongest World Cup for Germany since 2009 is said to bring sustainable upswing.
Sven Schwarz climbed out of the pool, tore both arms up and celebrated the silver medal like a title. The 23-year-old gave the German team a brilliant end of the swimming World Cup. “I can’t quite believe it yet,” said Schwarz shortly after his second podium of Singapore’s title fights.
Over 1,500 meters freestyle, he only had to give up a gripping final world champion Ahmed Jaouadi from Tunisia. Florian Wellbrock, four -time title holder in open water, swam in fifth place as the second German starter.
Black: World Cup balance sheet “an extreme upswing”
“It was a World Cup that we haven’t had that for years,” said Schwarz with permanent smiles in the interview zone. “Of course, this brings an extreme upswing directly to the first year to the Olympics.”
With twice gold, twice silver and once bronze, the German swimmers made the most successful record in World Cup basin competitions since 2009. At that time, Britta Steffen and Paul Biedermann had started for Germany.
At the award ceremony, Schwarz clapped for Jaouadi and waved happily to the audience. He also won the silver medal over 800 meters freestyle on Wednesday.
Wellbrock congratulates and arranges
At this World Cup he finally comes from the shadow of the other strong German long and medium-distance swimmers. In recent years, public attention had often focused on Wellbrock and Lukas Märtens. With this World Cup, Schwarz not only left many international competitors, but also the national teammates. “Of course, setting an exclamation mark gives a lot of strength and a lot of self -confidence,” he said.
Wellbrock was also happy for his national teammate. “Mega,” said the 27-year-old. “He developed incredibly well, you can only congratulate.” Wellbrock said to his own world championships: “If it had been going on again today with a medal, I think it would have been a bit too beautiful.” In the open water, he was the first swimmer to get gold four times at a World Cup.
Four German medalists in the pool
In addition to this and Wellbrock Olympic champion Märtens and Anna Elendt, the title fights had shaped from the German perspective in front of black ‘strong degree. Freistil-ace Märtens celebrated the World Cup title over 400 meters and won bronze over twice the distance. Breast swimmer Elendt managed the most surprising race from a German perspective. The 23-year-old sensationally won gold in the 100-meter race.
Internationally, Summer Mcintosh again surprised with impressive achievements. The 18-year-old from Canada won four gold and once bronze. So she was the most successful athlete of the pelvic competitions. The French swimming star Léon Marchand ensured another of many highlights with his world record over 200 meters in 1: 52.69 minutes. He won gold and silver twice.
Twelve -year -old ensures debate
The appearances of the only twelve -year -old Yu Zidi caused discussions. The Chinese won bronze with the 4×200 meter freestyle relay and thus became the latest World Cup medalist in swimming history.
Actually, athletes have to be 14 in the World Cup year in order to compete, but Zidi received a special permit for performance reasons. Among other things, Christian Hansmann, the board of directors of the German Swimming Association, criticized this.
At the unusually long world championships with 24 competition days, Hansmann and the DSV had reason to be happy early on. In the open water there were the four gold medals from Wellbrock – one of them with the season. Pauline Pfeif surprisingly won silver from the tower in water jumping. In this way, there is a medal balance of six gold, three times silver and once bronze. In this regard, too, Germany was last more successful in 2009.
