Spectacular pictures of the fastest sail race in the world
In the SailGP, the high-tech catamarans race across the water at 100 km/h. The pictures are correspondingly spectacular if something goes wrong when sailing in the absolute border area.
On August 16 and 17, Sassnitz will become a hotspot of the international sailing elite on Rügen. The Sailgp comes to Germany for the first time. It is the fastest sailing competition in the world that reaches high -tech catamarans up to 100 km/h, an enormous pace on the water. Nothing with sailing is faster and more agile.
The SailGP is a new event in sailing. Founded in 2018 by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and the world-class Russell Coutts. Your goal: to prepare sailing races as attractive to a wide audience as large car racing series – and thus earn money. The first race took place in Sydney in 2019.
Each of the Grand Prix competitions, which are held worldwide, run over six races over two days. All teams compete in the first five races of an event. After each race, the first -placed team receives ten points and the following ranks each one point less.
In the final race, the three teams finally compete with the highest score. The winning team of the entire season results from the highest number of points across all races. The reward for the effort is a prize money of $ 2 million.
The owners of the national teams are private individuals, often celebrities such as Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel or the Hollywood stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. The teams get sponsors on board for the races. Deutsche Bank is for the German team. Rolex has been a title sponsor of the Rolex Sailgp Championship since 2024.
