Many favorites stumble in the first round, a stumbling block

In the unequal duels in the DFB Cup, some outsiders sniffed a surprise. In the end, however, the Bundesliga clubs prevail-except in one case.

The favorites stumbled, but the very big surprises did not exist in the DFB Cup for the time being. Bundesliga promoted Hamburger SV just turned a embarrassment at the top division FK Pirmasens and struggled to a 2: 1 (1: 1, 0: 0) after extra time. The two-time cup winner RB Leipzig also struggled with the fourth division club SV Sandhausen, fell into deficit twice before a 4: 2 (2: 2) achieved.

On the other hand, the Bundesliga rival TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (4-0 with Hansa Rostock), VfL Wolfsburg (9: 0 at SV Hemelingen) and 1. FC Heidenheim (5-0 at Bahlinger SC) had no problems. So far, only Werder Bremen has failed from the Bundesliga in the first round. The Hanseatic League had a look at the 0-1 (0-0) against second division leader and previous year’s finalist Arminia Bielefeld.

DFB Cup: Bochum wins in extra time

Bundesliga relegation VfL Bochum, however, turned a first-round ko after two red cards for the hosts in the 3-1 (1: 1, 0: 1) after extension.

After a desolate performance, Guilherme Ramos (90th+2 minute) just saved the Hamburgers with his goal into the extension after Pirmasens had a long time dreamed of the sensation through a goal from HSV fan Yannick Grieß (53.). In the end, the forces were not enough, Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer gave the HSV the progress (100th).

Relief for RB Leipzig to Banzuzi goal

Ole Werner had certainly imagined his competitive game debut on the Leipzig coaching bench. The SV Sandhausen, which was passed through from the 2nd league, took the lead twice by Ampadu Wiafe (3rd) and Jahn Herrmann (18th). Leipzig’s newcomer Yan Diomande (6th), Routinier Willi Orban (23rd), Ezechiel Banzuzi (79.) and Xavi Simons (90.+6) still ensured a favorite win.

Wouter Burger (37th), twice Max Moerstedt (71st and 86th), as well as Fisnik Asllani (83.), made the Hoffenheim victory in Rostock perfectly.

Bremen -League Hemelingen had to move to the Weser Stadium due to space problems – and was there in a lost position. In the end, the Wolfsburgers booked the highest victory in their cup history.

Heidenheim only had problems in the initial phase before Leonardo Scienza (9th minute/61.), Mathias Honsak (34th), Mikkel Kaufmann (77th) and Sirlord Conteh (83.) ensured clear conditions.
