Despite the fall: Vingegaard wins the second Vuelta stage
The 80th Tour of Spain begins in Italy. Already on the second stage, the Danish top favorite is involved in a fall. Nevertheless, he cannot be beat on the mountain.
Despite a fall in Italian rain, the two-time tour of France winner Jonas Vingegaard has already shown a power demonstration on the second stage of the 80th Vuelta. The Dane got victory on the final climb to Limone Piemonte and thus also the red jersey of the overall first. After 159.5 kilometers, he referred the Italian Giulio Ciccone and the Frenchman David Gaudu in two and three in part two of the Italian tour of the Spain.
Before the 9.9 kilometer long climbing game with an average of 5.2 percent gradient occurred, Vingegaard had to survive a shock. With a rain-wet road, almost the entire Visma team went down a good 27 kilometers before the finish. The Dane, who had restored the connection a few kilometers later, got off lightly. Only a few grazes on his left arm could be seen.
Vingegaard, who replaced the Belgian opening winner Jasper Philipsen at the top, is the big favorite for overall victory. The 28-year-old hopes for a happy ending this season after having remained without a chance on the tour of France against his opponent Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian is not at the start at the Vuelta, just like last year’s winner Primoz Roglic, double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel and the German young star Florian Lipowitz.
On Saturday, Sprintstar Philipsen started the tour like the Tour de France with a win. At the Tour de France, he had had to give up on the third stage after a severe fall.
On Monday, the third part of San Maurizio Canavese to Ceres over 134.6 kilometers is waiting for the next stage on Italian soil. On the wavy terrain it should be difficult for the sprinter to stay on the main field. The Vuelta, which accommodates the climbing specialist with many mountain arrivals, ends on September 14th in Madrid.
