Tennis player complains about marijuana smell on the pitch
With the US Open, a few cannabis swaths like to blow over the courts. Some tennis stars do not get along well – the fragrance fits the tournament.
The concentration of players in tennis is actually the highest good. There is silence in the ranks during the ball change, often spectators are only allowed to enter or leave the stands during the breaks. At the US Open in New York, some professionals disturb a completely different factor of influence – the smell of marijuana.
The Norwegian player Casper Ruud has complained about it. “It is quite annoying when playing, is tired and someone smokes just a few meters away,” he told NRK to the Norwegian broadcaster. “For me this is the worst thing about New York. The smell is everywhere, even here in the places.” The system in Flushing Meadows must not be officially smoked. But either this rule is not consistently implemented or the smell penetrates from the nearby park to the courts.
Marijuana in New York for a long time
The consumption of cannabis in the US state of New York has been legal since 2021, and it has been sold freely since the end of 2022. And since then the topic at the US Open has been a permanent favorite. “We can’t do anything about it as long as the law is not changed, but I have strong doubts that this will happen,” said Casper Ruud, who came to the Mixed final at the US Open with the Polish IGA Swiatek.
Ruud is not the first to complain. “Oh my god, it is literally everywhere, the whole place smells of Weed,” said Alexander Zverev 2023. “Court 17 smells like Snoop Dogg’s living room.” The German player Tamara Korpatsch complained that she could “not breathe” in the smell. The Australian Nick Kyrgios also complained during a match that the marijuana smoke caused him as a asthmatic.
The US Open – the slightly different Grand Slam
While in Wimbledon, especially in Wimbledon, compliance with the etiquette in space and stands is still very important, the US Open are considered the free spirit among the Grand Slams. Here the audience traditionally goes loudly, loud music comes from the speakers between the ball changes. “An attack on the senses” are the US Open, said tennis journalist Molly Mcelwee CNN. This means a special challenge for the players – but if you want to win a Grand Slam, you also have to cope with it.
