Siegemund at US Open in round three – Lys gives up
Hope wearer Eva Lys ended her game prematurely at the US Open. Again, her disease causes problems. But a German tennis player remains in the tournament.
Wimbledon quarter-finalist Laura Siegemund joked after her third rounds at the US Open about her age. Eva Lys fought sadly about her task for renewed health problems with her emotions. The emotional situation of the two German tennis hopefuls could not have been more different.
With a heavy heart, Lys had to against the Czech Linda Noskova at 4: 6, 0: 3 decided that it will no longer go on. Siegemund, on the other hand, won 6: 4, 6-2 against the Russian Anastassija Sacharova and is the last remaining German participant in the women’s singles.
Siegemund: Eistonne important help for “old crackers like me”
“One one with asterisks,” said her tennis expert Barbara Rittner at Sporteurope.tv for the performance. Despite problems with the thigh, double specialist Siegemund also builds on the positive headlines from the classic lawn in London in New York.
What are your secret for her success as a 37-year-old? “I wish I had found the secret. I don’t know,” said the Metzinger and added in a good mood: “The ice sun is definitely a secret for such an old cracker like me.”
With an association around the right thigh, the Swabian tennis player had made up for a 1-4 deficit. She allowed herself four double errors in her first service game before increasing. “Then I ignited the turbo. At some point I was in the flow and played well. Then I tried not to think so much.”
For the first time since 2016, she has been in the third round at the New York Grand Slam tournament and, like Jan-Lennard Struff, plays for the men to reach the round of 16. On Saturday, Siegemund will deal with Sacharowa’s compatriot Jekaterina Alexandrowa.
Lys stops autoimmune disease
Her tennis colleague Lys, on the other hand, had to end her US Open hopes. The symptoms about their rheumatic autoimmune disease were too great.
“If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. I have had a few problems again in the past few days. Unfortunately, it got worse during the match,” said Lys, who had caused a sensation at the Australian Open with their round of 16.
Already in the morning she felt that it would “probably very, very difficult”. The disease has been affecting them for several years. In the past, too, she was slowed down from time to time.
Lys calls the physiotherapist and hopes in vain for relief
Because of the Grand Slam chance, the Hamburg native wanted to try the Czech Noskova, which was set to position 21. At 2: 5 from her point of view, German number three had the physiotherapist fetched. She pointed to her back, first lay down on a towel for treatment and then went off the pitch by the physiotherapist.
“I hoped that I might get a little relief, but that didn’t happen,” she said. This time the problems are not comparable to their pain at the tournament in Cleveland. Last week, the Hamburg woman had already withdrawn from the US Open at a preparation tournament for back complaints before the quarter -finals.
After a few minutes of treatment, Lys came back for her second-round appearance in New York against Noskova. She shortened to 4: 5, but then lost the first sentence. Then the world ranking 59 won. No more game until she signaled that the end was. Shaking his head, Lys stepped into a referee, hugged her opponent and hurried off the pitch. “It’s just a situation that I definitely have to cope with. It is of course very disappointing,” said the 23-year-old.
