World Cup in Thailand
Sensation missed: Volleyball players are out of the question at World Cup
As a blatant outsider, the German women initially make themselves gently. But the Olympic champion Italy does not give a real hope of a surprise.
The German volleyball players clearly missed the sensation against Olympic champion Italy and left in the World Cup round of 16. In the Thai capital Bangkok, the selection of the German Volleyball Association (DVV) was defeated by the big tournament favorite with 0: 3 (22:25, 18:25, 11:25). For the Italians around superstar Paola Egonu, it was the 33rd win in a row in an official game.
The DVV women got off to a good start and led 10: 8. The assumption around Libera Anna Pogany worked. But then the German Block couldn’t get enough access. To this end, the Italians repeatedly converted defense campaigns into good attack opportunities again and again.
In the second set, too, the DVV women initially kept well and were able to achieve some important block points. But the Italian defense remained outstanding and the Germans made too many mistakes. The third round then dominated the Olympic champions from the start and quickly led 10: 4. The misunderstandings increased at the German team.
Germany had won its first two games, but then lost a wafer thin against Poland in the fight for group victory and thus could not avoid the meeting with the Olympic champion. It is the first World Cup with 32 teams. The tournament is now taking place every two years. In 2022, Germany was eliminated in the intermediate round, which was still before the quarter -finals.
