EM 2021: ARD apologizes for reporter Tom Bartels

What a game: The match between Denmark and Russia tore every football fan out of their seat. Reporter Tom Bartels was also infected by the atmosphere. So much so that the ARD threw itself in the dust for him.

The opposite of good is well meant … Presumably, the ARD just wanted to protect its reporter Tom Bartels. But with an at least ambiguously worded tweet, she may have achieved the opposite.

What happened? Bartels was assigned to report on the Denmark-Russia game. During the game there were allegations from viewers that the 55-year-old commentator on the public broadcaster audibly sympathized with the Danes. The ARD sports show in charge of the reporting took this as an excuse to tweet: “Tom Bartels comments on the games with the best of his knowledge and belief from a neutral perspective. We apologize for the fact that this may not always work in some emotional situations. ”

Danes have a sympathy bonus with many fans

The statement “That this (…) does not always work” should certainly not have tasted Bartels. One can deduce from this that the editors may share the allegations. Bartels has been using the microphone at major soccer tournaments for many years. For example, he also commented on the 2014 World Cup final for ARD with the German team’s 1-0 victory over Argentina with Mario Götze’s decisive goal. (“Do it … yes, he does it!”).

Denmark’s national team has a bonus for many fans at this European Championship after top star Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during the first group match against Finland. The 29-year-old had to be revived, his team then lost the game 1-0. With the 4-1 win against the Russians, the Danish selection made it to the round of 16. Eriksen has since left the hospital and is recovering from his dramatic cardiac arrest at home in Odense.
