The background to this is Russia’s illegal war with Ukraine. The natural gas company “Gazprom” is 50 percent owned by the Russian state and thus indirectly finances part of the Russian war machine. The company has been the main sponsor of FC Schalke 04 since 2007. The current contract runs until 2025 and is considered vital for the indebted traditional club.
It is not yet clear how the partnership between the Royal Blues and the energy giant will continue. “The association will inform you about further possible steps in due course”, said the Gelsenkirchen club.
