With 18 aces: Struff puts Davis Cup team in the lead
Jan-Lennard Struff ensures the leadership of the German team in the Davis Cup against Japan. However, the veteran has to fight hard for the victory and can rely primarily on his serve.
Jan-Lennard Struff gave the German Davis Cup team 1-0 in the second qualification round against host Japan. The 35-year-old defeated 6: 4, 6: 7 (4: 7), 6: 4 in a competitive opening match in Tokyo Yoshihito Nishioka.
The German tennis professional thus continues his upward trend, after recently failing the 24-time Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic at the U.S.
In the absence of top player Alexander Zverev, Struff against Nishioka was primarily able to convince with his serve and nerve strength. The veteran struck 18 aces and fended off all ten break balls of his opponent.
Hanfmann can expand leadership
In the second single, Yannick Hanfmann today has to deal with Shintaro Mochizuki. On Saturday the German world-class double Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz are on the turn of two more individuals.
The German team needs three points to reach the final round in Bologna, Italy, which takes place from November 18 to 23. Then Zverev could be there again. The world ranking third had canceled the duel with Japan for stress reasons.
