Radium tour in Spain
Vingegaard after a climbing victory before the first Vuelta triumph
The professionals have to suffer again on the last mountain stage. But the big favorite from Denmark shows no weakness – and then attacks itself.
The Danish bike star Jonas Vingegaard has won the last climbing exam of the Vuelta and is very close to his first overall victory in the tour of the Spain. On the 20th section with several heavy mountain ratings, the 28-year-old got his third stage victory from the Visma team and expanded his lead in the red jersey of the entire most. On the 165.6 kilometers between Robledo and the Bola del Mundo summit at 2251 meters, propalestinic protests came again.
After three hard weeks, only a fall on the last stage or an illness can still prevent the victory of the Tour de France winner from 2022 and 2023. His lead over the Portuguese Joao Almeida is 1:16 minutes. Third is the Briton Tom Pidcock with 3:11 minutes behind. The 80th edition of the tour ends on Sunday with a flatter stage in Madrid.
Vingegaard waits – and then strikes
4226 meters of altitude had to be mastered for the professionals on Saturday. For a long time a group drove ahead. However, the field around the favorites kept the distance small. At the final increase of the highest category for the Bola del Mundo with an average of 8.6 percent climber, the potted drivers initially tackled.
On the last particularly steep piece with a difficult street surface, Almeida from the UAE team Emirates drove from the front and tried in ving to distance Vingegaard. Shortly before the last kilometer, the Dane attacked and left the competition behind.
Road blockade from demonstrators
Vingegaard had been a big favorite on the tour in the absence of tour dominator Tadej Pogacar and led the overall classification for a long time. However, Almeida was a strong challenger and never made the Danes’ lead.
Almost twenty kilometers before the destination of the stage, a group of demonstrators tried to block a street. The leadership group and the main field were able to drive around the people. Police officers tried to dissolve the blockade. Several demonstrators had Palestinian flags in their hands.
Protests Propalestinian demonstrators are a central theme of this year’s Spain tour. They relate to Israel’s procedure in the Gaza Strip.
