Celebrities celebrate the European champion – and a star cries on TV
In a dramatic final, the German Basketball team gets EM-Gold. The triumph causes enthusiasm. An injured star experiences a particularly emotional moment.
The German basketball players did it: she got the second EM title for Germany. In a close final, the team around captain Dennis Schröder prevailed against Turkey with 88:83. After that, there was a lot of celebrations – in Riga, but also at home and beyond.
Numerous celebrities had cheered on the TV and were happy with the German team. Football legend Thomas Müller reported from Canada with a video on his social media channels. “This is how it looks, boys. Horny shit. We are European champions. Double header. World champion, European champion. Let’s go, boys!”, He congratulated the team, who had already won World Cup two years ago.
At that time Moritz Wagner was an important part of the team, but was missing from the European Championship because of an injury. The NBA star from the Orlando Magic accompanied the tournament at Magenta Sport as an expert and let his emotions run wild. When his brother Franz had a jersey with his name at the award ceremony, tears came live on TV: “I would love to be there,” he said. “I didn’t expect Franz to wear my jersey there. That does something with a one,” Wagner later explained when he had taken his own.
Federal President pursues basketball final in the hall
Other sports legends did little words immediately after the victory. “European champion !!!!”, Dirk Nowitzki, Germany’s best basketball player ever. Ex-tennis star Boris Becker wrote: “Yessssss !!!! We won and are European champions!”
After the final, DBB boss Ingo Weiss praised the team performance. “It was incredible. The boys wanted it that way, you saw it, they fought,” he said at RTL. “Everyone fights for the other, nobody wants to be the star. The star is the team.”
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had traveled to Riga for the final and congratulated the local winners: “Team spirit and will to win make this team a role model for sport in Germany.” Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised the team’s “sensational performance”. “We are proud of you, you are an inspiration for young athletes,” he wrote on X.
Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder also sent a detailed congratulations to the team. “Pure thrill until the end” was the final: “This title is deserved!”
