After gold, it’s all about the crystal ball

In the first Alpine Ski World Cup races after the Olympics, Sofia Goggia and Corinne Suter are fighting for the early win of the crystal ball in the downhill double today (10.30 a.m.) and on Sunday (10 a.m., both live ORF1) in Crans-Montana. Italy’s serial winner Goggia leads with 400 points ahead of Olympic champion Suter (331). Those who are more than 100 points ahead after the weekend will have the ball before the final. In third place (278), Austria’s Ramona Siebenhofer has at least outsider chances.

After her knee injury in preparation, Goggia had to settle for Olympic silver behind Suter in Beijing. The Swiss could thus create a rare triple. She would be the fourth runner after Olga Pall (1968), Figini (1984-1985) and Vonn (2009-2010) to be an Olympic, World and World Cup winner in downhill at the same time.

The return of Nina Ortlieb is a pleasure for the ÖSV team. The Vorarlberg native returned to the piste on which she had suffered a serious knee injury 13 months earlier in a fall during training. Elisabeth Reisinger from the Mühlviertel also competes in both races.

In the men’s slalom doubles in Garmisch-Partenkirchen today (9.30/12.30) and Sunday (9.10/12.30/both live ORF 1) a preliminary decision regarding the small crystal ball could also be made. After six races with just as many different winners, Austria’s combined Olympic champion Johannes Strolz is eleventh and only 112 points behind the leading Norwegian Lucas Braathen. Manuel Feller, third, is 72 points short of the top position.
