Christian Lell
Ex-Bayern professional reports on difficult childhood and “life-tired phase”
During his active time, ex-Bundesliga professional Christian Lell made headlines with scandals. Now the 41-year-old speaks about difficult times in his life.
He was considered a talented defender and candidate for the national team, but Christian Lell did not make the big breakthrough. Often enough he stood in the way of scandals and lack of discipline. At the broadcaster World TV, the 41-year-old spoke about the dark side of his career.
Lell revealed that he suffered from depression during his active time and was apparently even at risk of suicide. “It was a very unconscious behavior in a fear. I tried to look for the stop outside,” reported the ex-professional, who played for FC Bayern, among others. “This has been messed up and in the depression that led me into a very lifelong phase.”

Apparently his difficult childhood also had a large part in this. Lell reported in the conversation in a “very conflicting parental home with violence, alcohol and abuse”. “For me, football was the safe harbor and escaping from an environment that was very conflicting.” In 2014 he had to accept a difficult stroke of fate when his sister died of the metabolic disorder of cystic fibrosis at the age of 27.
Christian Lell: Uli Hoeneß asked about the mother’s account number
In connection with his family, Lell talked about a special experience with Uli Hoeneß. In the contract negotiations as a youth player, Hoeneß asked him about his mother’s account number. The Bayern manager at the time had learned about his difficult family situation through Lells at the time. “Because you came here without a consultant, I would like to transfer something to your mother appreciatively,” Hoeneß told him at the time.
To escape depression, Lell was looking for professional help. “That was the start -up aid,” he said. So he “found fear of love, reflection and acceptance,” said the ex-Bundesliga player. “I am grateful today that I was allowed to have this borderline experience to have found the step to me.”
Christian Lell played a total of 119 Bundesliga games for FC Bayern, Hertha BSC and 1. FC Köln. He also ran for various German junior national teams. As a player, he noticed alcohol at the wheel, among other things, and allegations of domestic violence were also raised. After the football career, Lell initially worked as an entrepreneur.
