Former Davis Cup captain Niki Pilic died
The great success in German tennis is closely linked to his name. Now Mr. Davis Cup has died at the age of 86.
The former Davis Cup coach Niki Pilic is dead. The long-time tennis trainer died on Monday at the age of 86 in his Croatian homeland, as the Croatian tennis association of the German Press Agency confirmed.
Pilic led the German Davis Cup team to the title three times in 1988, 1989 and 1993 and had players like Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Carl-Uwe Steeb or Eric Jelen at his side. He also won the prestigious team competition with Croatia (2005) and as a consultant with Serbia (2010).
From 2015 to 2017, Pilic returned to the German Tennis Bund as a consultant. “Niki was immediately a fire and flame,” DTB sports director Klaus Eberhard recalled his contact with the pilic, who is crazy about tennis.
Until the end, Pilic, who also embodied world -class as a player, stood on the tennis court and worked with young talents in Croatia. The protégés in his academy also included later the world ranking list Novak Djokovic.
