DFB blocks Union coach Baumgart after middle finger gesture
Union coach Steffen Baumgart’s outburst of anger at the game in Frankfurt has consequences. At the next Bundesliga game, Baumgart has to watch from the stands.
The control committee of the German Football Association (DFB) has closed coach Steffen Baumgart from 1. FC Union Berlin for unsportsmanlike behavior for a championship game. In addition, the DFB imposed a fine of over 15,000 euros. The association accepted the judgment.
Baumgart had initially received a warning from referee Sven Jablonski in the 88th minute at the away game at Eintracht Frankfurt. After the referee turned, the 53-year-old left the coaching zone and kicked a paper ball from a Frankfurt choreography far on the field, whereupon the referee Baumgart showed the red card.

A minute earlier, after a transformed penalty of the Frankfurt penalty, the coach briefly showed the outstretched middle finger of the right hand towards the field, as the sports court continued. However, it is assumed that no specific person should be insulted with this gesture. It was also evaluated as mitigating that Baumgart had apologized for his misconduct in the referee cabin.
Baumgart has to follow the next home game against his previous employer Hamburger SV from the stands. He is not allowed to enter the interior half an hour before half an hour after the final whistle. He is also not allowed to contact his team during this period.
