Reports: UEFA could vote on Israel’s suspension

Experts are calling for a World Cup exclusion from Israel’s footballers because of the Gaza War. Such a scenario seems to be more concrete at the European umbrella organization UEFA.

The European Football Union UEFA could vote on the suspension of Israel in the coming week. According to the newspaper “The Times” and the AP news agency, a majority of the Executive Committee should support such an exclusion in the Gaza War. The UEFA initially did not comment on the reports.

A suspension would probably not only affect Israel’s national team, but also Maccabi Tel Aviv in the European Cup. In the group phase of the Europa League, the association is guest at VfB Stuttgart (December 11) and at SC Freiburg (January 22). According to schedule, the national team will play the next games on October 11th in Norway and on October 14th in Italy.

US government apparently against exclusion

Several experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council had requested an exclusion this week. In her opinion, this is necessary in response to Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, where hundreds of thousands of civilians are on the run.

The sport should not give the impression that everything is the same, the independent rapporteurs said. “Sports associations must not look away with serious human rights violations,” they write.

According to a report by Sky News, the US government led by President Donald Trump faces a possible exclusion for the World Cup, which takes place in 2026 in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

A spokesman for Marco Rubio’s ministry responsible for foreign policy told the British broadcaster: “We will work with all the attempts to complete all attempts to exclude Israel’s national football team from the World Cup.”

Israel is currently playing for World Cup ticket

Israel always rejects all allegations within the framework of the UN Human Rights Council. The country accuses the Council and its rapporteurs to be biased against Israel. The footballers of Israel are currently playing a ticket for the World Cup in the European qualification round. In group I, Israel is currently in third place behind Norway and Italy. The team played the last game so far on September 8 against Italy (4: 5).

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had already rejected sanctions against Israel the previous week. There was no violation of the Olympic Charter, it said. In the sanctions against Russian athletes because of the war in Ukraine, the IOC had mentioned violations of the Olympic Charter. Russia’s Olympic committee is still suspended. The national soccer team also does not take part in the World Cup qualification.
