Völler stops at the DFB in late 2028
In three years, Rudi Völler will finally end at the German Football Association. This was emphasized by the world champion, former team boss and current sports director.
Rudi Völler will not extend his contract as sports director of the German Football Association after the European Championships in 2028. The 65-year-old announced this in the interview of the magazine “Stern”. “I’ve already extended twice. After the summer of 2028, it is really over,” said Völler, who took over the office in early 2023.
He has no worry that retirement would be difficult, emphasized the 1990 world champion, who led the DFB selection as a team leader at the 2002 World Cup to the final. “I had a long career, I can let go. Football will always play a role at home,” said Völler.
Despite the fourth and last place at the final round of the Nations League and the bumpy start in the World Cup qualification, Völler said very praised by national coach Julian Nagelsmann. “We can be happy that Julian is our national coach. Having won him for the office is the best that I have succeeded in at DFB in recent years,” said Völler, who also sees it as his task to convey rest, especially after setbacks.
World champion team from 1990 meets
