Rowing World Cup in Shanghai
Silver for Zeidler: Successful World Cup return after a break
Strong comeback: Rower Oliver Zeidler fights for a surprisingly silver at the World Cup and once again proves his world class.
Oliver Zeidler gave the German rowers at the World Cup in Shanghai despite limited preparation and narrowly missed a successful title defense. In the victory of the Greek Tokyo Olympic champion Stefanos Douskos (6: 36.75 minutes), the 29-year-old fought second place in a tough race (6: 37.17). Zeidler just missed his fourth World Cup title after 2019, 2022 and 2023.
Before the World Cup, Zeidler had rather minor his chances of defending the title. For him, the title fights in China were the comeback on the international stage after a long break. After his Olympic victory in Paris in the previous year, Germany’s athlete in 2024 focused on his studies and therefore did without the European Championship and the World Cup races this season.
Para boat fetches first gold
In the women, Alexandra Föster from Meschede previously rowed to fifth in the victory of the Irish Fiona Murtagh (7: 12.27 minutes) in 7: 26.31 minutes. The 23-year-old was already a great success for her first A final at a World Cup.
The first gold medal for the German Rowing Association had previously had a para-boat: Kathrin Marchand (Leverkusen) and Valentin Luz (Frankfurt) won in the Mixed double-white PR3, set up for a world’s best and at the same time won the first World Cup medal in this boat class since 2017.
