No World Cup playoff games against Russia: Czech national team also cancels

Russia’s attack on Ukraine also poses a problem for Fifa. With the Czech Republic, Russia’s last possible opponent has now canceled the playoffs for World Cup qualification.

First, Poland refused to play in the upcoming soccer World Cup playoffs against soccer opponent Russia on March 24, then Sweden followed suit. Now the third and last game partner, the Czech Republic, has also canceled.

After the Polish and Swedish, the Czech Football Association also announced on Sunday that it “under no circumstances” wants to play against Russia. On Instagram, the association makes a clear statement: “The FACR management, led by the Executive Committee, the implementation team and the players of the Czech national football team, agree that in today’s situation it is not possible to play against the Russian national team, too not on the neutral field. We all want the war to end as soon as possible.”

FIFA must find a solution for the World Cup playoff games as soon as possible

This puts the world governing body FIFA under even more pressure to come up with a solution for the playoff games on March 24th and 29th. According to the original plan, Poland was to play in Russia first, and five days later the winner would meet the winner of the game from Sweden and the Czech Republic again in Russia.

According to the Czech association’s announcement, contact should now be made with Fifa and also with the European football union Uefa. A total of three tickets will be awarded in the European playoffs for the World Cup finals in Qatar (21 November to 18 December).
