Chancellor at Miosga
“Border exceeded”: Merz comments on video evidence in football
Friedrich Merz holds it with Borussia Dortmund in football. Now the Federal Chancellor is asked about the controversial video evidence. He can imagine an end of the Var.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz can imagine an end to coaches, players and football fans often controversial video evidence. “I wouldn’t mind if you abolish him again and trust the decision of referees,” said the CDU politician in the ARD program “Caren Miosga”.
However, Merz also made it clear that the “difficult question” was. “I am already in the club at Borussia Dortmund for a long time and am involved in many football games,” said the 69-year-old, who has been a member of the BVB supervisory board in the past.
Merz: “No completed opinion”
“I have no opinion, because on the one hand there is the possibility to correct decisions,” he added. On the other hand, the border seemed to be “exceeded” in the “desire for total perfection”.
The so-called VAR is used in controversial situations in games of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga to subsequently correct wrong decisions. Since its introduction, the video evidence has often caused resentment in addition to consent. Critics are bothered by long interruptions, uncertainty in the goal celebration and supposedly missing independence of the referees on the field. On the other hand, the number of wrong decisions has decreased significantly.
