Five years after his death, Diego Armando Maradona continues to arouse passion, nostalgia and admiration around the world. His legacy, far from fading, continues to generate emotion among fans who see in each of his objects a living part of football history.
Now, a new opportunity will allow admirers of the “10” to get closer to the myth: the house Matchday Football Auctions will auction an exclusive collection of personal items and historical t-shirts used by the Argentine idol.
The event will take place online between October 28 and November 28with a total duration of 30 days.
There will be more than twenty unique pieces, among which t-shirts from his stages in Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelonain addition to iconic objects such as the hoops he used in his farewell match and a plaque commemorating the championship of 1981 obtained with the “Xeneize”. Each item represents a fragment of the life and career of the person who transformed football into art.
The undisputed jewel of the auction will be the shirt that Maradona dressed in the final of the 1984 King’s Cup between the Barcelona and the Athletic Club of Bilbaoremembered for the violent episode known as “The Battle of the Bernabéu”.
That night, Diego was reunited with Andoni Goikoetxeathe defender who had fractured him a year earlier, and the confrontation led to a massive brawl that marked the end of his time at the Catalan club. “We all went head-to-head,” Diego himself would recall years later about that moment that remained etched in the memory of football.
According to the auction house, the garment preserves the traces of that football battle: it has tears in the neck, a horizontal cut due to a struggle and tears in the fabric, signs that certify its authenticity.
The story behind the shirt is also unique: it was collected by a washerwoman from the Barcelona, who kept it as a souvenir and years later gave it to the father of the current owner. The piece remained in that family for four decades, until now, when it was decided to put it up for sale.
The collection will also include personal items such as earrings worn by Maradona at his farewell candy box, evoking his immortal phrase: “I made a mistake and paid, but the ball is not stained”. Meanwhile, his jersey Mexico World Cup ’86sold in 8 million dollarscontinues to hold the record for the most expensive sports garment in history.
This new auction promises to rekindle the flame of the myth, demonstrating once again that the legacy of the “Cosmic Kite” is still as alive as its eternal magic on the court.
