Mr. Olympia 2025: What the German chances are – and what else is important
The bodybuilding event of the year is coming up: Mr. Olympia 2025. Two German hopefuls will once again be taking part in the competition. Everything important at a glance.
Bodybuilding fans look forward to this event all year round, athletes prepare for it for months: The 61st Mr. Olympia will take place again this year in Las Vegas in the US state of Nevada. From October 10th to 13th, the best bodybuilders will compete there in various categories.
Which classes start when? Who could win this year? What are the chances of the German athletes?
The most important thing about Bodybuilding-Highlight of the year:
What is the Mr. Olympia?
Mr. Olympia is the most important competition in international bodybuilding – the world championship of the sport. The Bodybuilding pioneer Joe Weider, who died in 2013 at the age of 93, founded the competition. The first Mr. Olympia took place in New York City in 1965. In recent years the event has mainly increased in… Las Vegasbut individual editions were moved to Orlando, Florida.
Who are the favorites?
In the heavyweight class – called Men’s Open or Mr. Olympia – the Nigerian-British bodybuilder Samson Dauda, 39, is once again one of the favorites for the title after his victory last year. But the Iranian Hadi Choopan, 38, and the American Derek Lunsford, 32, are hot on his heels. Choopan won the competition in 2022 and Lunsford the year after. So they both want to overthrow Dauda and take back the title.
Things should be even more exciting at Classic Physique. Canadian Chris Bumstead, 30, has ended his career after six wins in a row. The finalists from last year can now hope for first place in this class: Mike Sommerfeld (32, Germany), Ramon Queiroz (30, Brazil), Breon Ansley (45, USA).
What are the German chances?
The German Mike Sommerfeld surprisingly took second place in the Classic Physique category at last year’s Mr. Olympia. Since long-time winner Chris Bumstead is no longer taking part, Sommerfeld is one of the top favorites for the title. Also because he won the Arnold Classics 2025, the second most important competition in bodybuilding this year. He would be the first German athlete to win the Mr. Olympia.
Urs Kalecinski had previously tried this again and again in Classic Physique. However, there was no getting past Bumstead and finally Sommerfeld. Now the 27-year-old has switched to heavyweight and is competing in the “Open” class for the first time at the Mr. Olympia. A win this year is still unrealistic as he is new to the category and has to gain weight first. But experts consider Kalecinski to be a contender for the title in the next few years. He has set himself the goal of top 10 for the Mr. Olympia 2025.
