Biathletes remember Laura Dahlmeier at the award ceremony

The death of Laura Dahlmeier was a shock for the biathlon scene. Two successful athletes remembered their colleague who had an accident at the Bavarian Sports Prize.

Actually it should be about Franziska Preuß’ successes. The biathlete was awarded the Bavarian Sports Prize on Saturday evening. But Preuß and also the former exceptional biathlete Magdalena Neuner used the opportunity to focus on Laura Dahlmeier, who died in a mountain accident in Pakistan in July.

The death of her former colleague was “a huge shock,” said Preuss: “I still find it hard to believe that you no longer see her in the winter with skis in her hand or with ski touring skis on her shoulder.” The fact that Dahlmeier had an accident while pursuing her great passion, mountaineering, “comforts me a little,” explained the 31-year-old award winner. “I think she is doing well in heaven now and is watching us from heaven now.

Magdalena Neuner on Laura Dahlmeier’s death: “Still unbelievable”

Magdalena Neuner, who gave the eulogy for Preuß, also remembered Dahlmeier. “I still find it unbelievable,” said Neuner. “But the way I got to know Laura, she is a person who would say: We have to look forward positively.” Dahlmeier consciously took risks and lived life the way she wanted. “She didn’t let anyone talk her into it and she went her own way and I think we all don’t know when our book will be over. That’s what my grandma said,” explained Neuner. The award ceremony will be broadcast on Bavarian television on Sunday at 10:30 p.m.

Laura Dahlmeier – a life at the limit

Preuß and Dahlmeier, who is one year older, competed together in the World Cup for years. In 2015 they won World Cup gold together with the German relay team. Neuner had already ended her career when Dahlmeier entered biathlon at the top level.

The 31 year old Dahlmeier was climbing Laila Peak with her rope partner at the end of July when she was hit by falling rocks at an altitude of 5,700 meters. According to her management, Dahlmeier had ordered that in the event of her death, her body should not be recovered if helpers put their lives in danger during the rescue.
