“Everything was ripped apart”: BVB coach Kovac complains about the referee
After the defeat in the top game between Bayern and Dortmund, BVB coach Kovac doesn’t give a damn about referee Bastian Dankert’s management of the game. One scene in particular annoys him.
From Borussia Dortmund’s point of view, the score was 1:2 after the top Bundesliga game at FC Bayern. But the game still had an aftermath. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac complained bitterly about referee Bastian Dankert and criticized him heavily.
“He blew the whistle on everything, so pettily,” complained the Borussia coach in an interview with “Sky”. “The refereeing performance was really bad today,” Kovac added later on ZDF and said: “He blew the whistle on a lot of things where we all grabbed each other’s heads. That wasn’t football.”
Kovac was particularly annoyed by Munich’s opening goal by star striker Harry Kane. Before his header goal, Kane had lightly pushed opponent Serhou Guirassy away from him with both arms. “Basically, that’s not a foul for me,” said Kovac. But because Dankert generally whistled very pettily, this was, according to Kovac, “a clear wrong decision. He should have taken it back.”
Niko Kovac predicts: “Now I’ll get in trouble again”
During the game, the BVB coach discussed the matter with the referee and was warned for it. “I told him: The yellow card is okay. My first half wasn’t good. But his whole game wasn’t good either. I have to say that.”
These are the most important duels between Bayern and Dortmund
Harry Kane vs. Nico Schlotterbeck Harry Kane (l.) is FC Bayern’s goal wonderwuzzi. He scored 18 goals in ten competitive games – a sensational rate. Taking him out of the game completely may be impossible, but BVB defender Nico Schlotterbeck will still try as the central man in the back three. As an example, Kovac cited match winner Kane, the best player on the field that evening with a goal and several outstanding actions. “A great player,” Kovac also thought, but said: “Harry Kane is an Englishman. He would never have gotten what he was whistled for today in England.” Kovac then said: “Now I’ll get in trouble again, but I have to say this.”
Bayern against Dortmund: Referee Dankert defends himself
Referee Dankert defended his decision not to annul Kane’s 1-0 win. “This is a completely normal movement cycle for the attacker and also the defender,” he said on Sky. “It’s not a push, it’s not a shove in the back from Serhou Guirassy that Harry Kane gets a header.” Even when he looked at the video images of the scene after the final whistle, he saw “no impulse” that would have made a foul whistle against Kane necessary. “That’s standard practice in the Bundesliga, that’s why I recognized the goal.”
Kane himself also commented on the situation – As expected, he considers his duel to be within the rules. “If we whistle something like that as a foul, then I don’t know where it’s going to lead,” said the goalscorer.
